Dera Gopipur is a small but beautiful town in Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is one of the famous historical places in the state and is popular for National level Fairs and crafting etc. The city is located 49 km towards South from District head quarters Dharamsala. History of Dera Gopipur

Dehra, which is currently a tehsil in Kangra district, was a town of British India. The town is divided into Dehra and Gopipur by Beas. According to the legend, Kalyavana demon was disappeared in some caves in the Gopipur foothills and was killed inside the caves by Lord Krishna. There is an old Pandav temple in the town that dates back to the times of Mahabharata. Foreign invaders used this place as a camp for their expedition to hill states. Dera Gopipur is situated at 31.90°N 76.22°E with an average elevation of 503 meters. The town lies on the shore banjks of Beas. A new bridge built over the river provides transport facility to the people. Beas River flows past Dera Gopipur. A nearby major structure to this town is Pong reservoir, which is also known as Maharana Pratap reservoir. This is a man-made lake with 45 km length and 15-18 km width. As per India census in 2001, there is total population of 4336 in Dera Gopipur. Among them 52% are males and 48% are females. Population of under years of age constitutes 11%. The town has an average literacy rate of 79%, while the national average is 59.5%. 82% males and 76% females are literate here.

Dera Gopipur is famous for handloom weaving industry. In older times, handlooms were part of every house of this town. Lungi and gamcha are the common items woven here. These woven products are supplied to wholesale buyers in the town and they send them to the Indian markets. Nowadays, most of the handlooms are replaced by power looms.
